How to get your P.A.T. Testing done for Nothing!! One of our customers recently contacted us to say that they can get their P.A.T. Testing done cheaper than Pure-PAT could offer....so we investigated further. In every industry there is always someone who knows someone who can do a job “cheaper”, many of these “cheaper” companies (or people posing as legitimate companies) are often the subject of TV programmes like Rogue Traders or Watchdog. We were recently told by one of our customers, who we had looked after for many years, that they had been made an offer to have their PAT Testing carried out at a price that was considerably cheaper than Pure-PAT,
and when he told us the price we were astounded at just how cheap they were. We also worked out that, unless they were super-human, they could not possibly be doing a proper job and making an honest living. We needed to find out if this “cheaper” company was carrying out the work properly and safely within the industry guidelines, and see if our customer was getting a genuine service at a bargain price. WHAT WE DID NEXT:
We made an arrangement with our customer that we would supply him with TEN known faulty electrical items that we had previously removed from other premises and we would
install them in a safe manner on his premises (none were plugged into the mains supply) ready for testing. These were left at his premises the day before the “cheaper” company were due to arrive to carry out the testing. The next day two young scruffy lads from the cheaper company eventually arrived on his premises and over one hour late (with no apology) and with a non-calibrated “e-bay special” test machine. This makes any tests worthless since the test machine may not be accurately recording test results. So they should have been turned away straightaway, but they were left to continue with the job. Four hours later the two young lads said that they had completed all the tests and that everything had passed and was fine and how would you like to pay the bill sir? To cut a long story short, one of our Senior Manager’s was already on site and was asked by our customer to have a quick word with these lads. On doing so he found out that they had both only been employed by their company for a couple of weeks, they
had no qualifications and only a few hours training. Our Manager then went with them to show them the TEN faulty items that they should have failed and showed them the reasons why the items were unsafe to use, this was followed up by our customer contacting the “Managing Director” of the cheaper company and informing him that his “boys” had just wasted four hours of their time on his premises and to not bother sending any bill to him for wasting everyone’s time that day. This is not an isolated incident and there have been many other instances of people being duped by cheap prices for a service that is virtually non-existent and worthless - leaving the
customer paying again to have a more reputable company to do the job properly - how many times have you heard that about other trades as well? Be sure to check out anyone who
is offering PAT Testing for less than £1 per appliance. Make sure they have Liability Insurance, Qualifications (City & Guilds 2377), references from other customers, and a test machine that is been checked for calibration - if they can’t prove all of these then don’t entertain them even if you think the price is right!!
